World Tuberculosis Day March 24, 2016

The World Tuberculosis Day takes place on March 24, 2016. It is a day to build public awareness about the global epidemic of tuberculosis and efforts to eliminate the disease. The day is observed annually and commemorates the day in 1882 when Dr. Robert Koch astounded the scientific community by announcing that he had discovered the cause of tuberculosis, the TB bacillus. World Blood Donor Day

The theme of this year’s campaign is “Thank you for saving my life.”  Celebrated on June 14, countries around the world celebrate World Blood Donor Day. The event serves to thank voluntary unpaid blood donors for their life-saving gifts of blood and to raise awareness of the need for regular blood donations to ensure quality, safety and availability of blood and blood products for patients in need.  Transfusion of blood and blood products helps save millions of lives every year. It can help patients suffering from life-threatening conditions live longer and with higher quality of life, and supports complex medical and surgical procedures. (World Health Organization)

World ‘No Tobacco’ Day

Celebrated on May 31, the World Health Organization (WHO) develops global campaigns centred on increasing awareness and understanding of health impacts to influence health outcomes.  According to the World Health Organization, “One in every 10 cigarettes, and many other tobacco products, consumed worldwide are illegal, making the illicit trade of tobacco products a major global concern from many perspectives, including health, legal, economic, governance and corruption. The tobacco industry and criminal groups are among those who profit from the illegal tobacco trade, leaving the public to pay the health and security costs.”
